DEVELOPERS NOTES
Will supporting the GS as
a controller in my FPS bloat the network code?
Q. How do I control my movement and other actions
with the GS?
A.
The GS includes a handheld controller which acts
as a secondary device allowing the gamer to move
their character plus perform other actions.
Q.
I'm a keyboard/mouse guy so what happens with
+MLOOK?
A.
Most of us in the office are also keyboard/mouse
guys. Having mouse look active is possible with
the GS but more of a question of whether you would
want it active all the time. The GS works different
in that you can shoot anytime, anywhere on the
screen. Outside of standard head movement to see
whats going on around you, normally the +mlook
is active to enable you to "center"
the screen on enemies. With the GS that isn't
needed since your aiming at anything moving and
pulling the trigger. It's a different application.
Q. Will the GS VGA connection cause any signal
degradation or problems with my video?
A. No, you shouldn't find any difference.
With some of the VGA passthrough cables included
with DVD drives you may notice signal degradation
in the form of your onscreen text becoming blurry.
However, you should not even be able to tell that
a passthrough is connected.
Q. Does the GS work with 3D accelerators?
Any issues with certain chipsets?
A.
We have tested extensively with all the major
chipsets and popular cards in-house and found
no problems. Everything from a 1 MB ATI card to
your newest AGP GeForce cards. Our device is compatible
with each and the VGA pass-through cable should
be attached to the last VGA connection (i.e. if
you have a secondary 3DFX accelerator card installed,
attach the GS VGA cable to this instead of off
your 2D card).
Q. Is the white screen flash visible?
A.
The screen flash is visible but we have an adjustable
dial on the gun base which you can modify the
intensity. For example, some of us in the office
have our GS' set to a lighter grey. The flash
occurs quickly and you don't notice is after the
initial setup. The console systems and arcade
tend to flash more noticeably only because the
intensity is bright white as the machines are
normally in darkly lit areas.
Q.
Why doesn't the GS look like a real gun with solid
metal and real bullets?
A. This ..is probably the most often
asked question (leave out the bullets part). What
we could do is create the most realistic looking
PC gun, mold it in metal, make it cordless, sell
it only online (no retailers would carry it),
and then fight lawsuits till the mid-2000's. Sound
cool? Heh.
Q. Will supporting the GS in my FPS game bloat
the network code?
A. Sending a GS shot only takes marginally
more bandwidth than a normal mouse/keyboard shot.
Plus, there is only one message sent for a trigger
on, and another for a trigger off. You don't do
this many times a second and the impact is next
to nil.
